Unique Kauai Activities: 5 Experiences Actually Worth Your Time
This post is based on Episode 224 of the Hawaii’s Best podcast.
Most Kauai itineraries look pretty similar. Beach, snorkel, sunset. And those things are great, don’t get me wrong.
But if you want to leave Kauai feeling like you actually got the island, you need a few experiences that go deeper than the highlight reel.
In Episode 224 of the Hawaii’s Best podcast, I shared my personal top five Kauai experiences worth your time.
Not the most popular things. Not the most Instagrammed. Just the five that I think give you a real feel for what makes Kauai unlike anywhere else in Hawaii, or the world for that matter.
Some of these cost money. Two are completely free. One might be the most meaningful hour of your whole trip. Let’s get into it.

1. See the Na Pali Coast (By Air or By Sea)
If there’s one thing on this list that belongs in the “once in a lifetime” category, it’s seeing the Na Pali Coast. Those towering sea cliffs, the deep green valleys, the waterfalls dropping straight into the ocean. There’s nothing else like it.
The best way to take it all in is through a helicopter tour or a boat tour. You simply can’t get the same vantage point from the road or even from the Kalalau Trail.
The trail is also not doable for a lot of people, and even if it is, you’re looking at the coast, not along it.
Helicopter tours mostly depart from Lihue Airport. In the episode, I was honest about the fact that there have been accidents, and you should weigh that for yourself. It’s a real consideration.
But what I also said is that a Na Pali Coast boat tour is equally as incredible in its own way. You’re out on the water, right up close to those cliffs, and it’s one of the best Kauai experiences you can book.
If the helicopter feels like too much of a risk, go with the boat. You won’t feel like you missed out.
This is one of the best Kauai activities that’s truly unique to this island. You can’t do this anywhere else.
2. Mountain Tubing and the Story Beneath the Surface
This one surprises people, and that’s exactly why it’s on the list. Mountain tubing on Kauai takes you through old sugar plantation irrigation canals and hand-dug tunnels from the island’s plantation era.
The sugar industry is long gone, but somehow those canals became one of the most fun outings on any Hawaiian island.
You’re floating through the island’s interior, surrounded by all that deep green that earned Kauai the nickname “The Garden Isle.” You drift from open canals into dark tunnels, headlamp on, cool water moving you through. The water is cold, just so you know. But it’s the kind of cold that makes you laugh.
It’s adventurous without being intense. I’d say it’s great for families with kids who are around eight years old and up.
And what I love most about this one is that it carries a little history with it. You’re floating through infrastructure that was literally carved by hand to grow sugar on a Pacific island.
That’s a story worth knowing while you’re in the tube.
When you get home and flip through your trip photos, this one will come up. It’s one of those unique Kauai activities that you won’t find on any other island.
3. A Luau Is More Than Dinner (If You Show Up Right)
I want to be upfront about something before I recommend a luau. A luau can be one of the best evenings of your entire trip, but only if you go in with the right mindset.
If you walk in treating it like just another dinner and a show, you’ll probably miss what makes it genuinely special.
Because a good luau is story, song (mele), food, ceremony, and hula. And hula isn’t just a dance. It preserves memory.
It carries meaning. It tells a story that has been passed down through generations.
There’s also the imu ceremony, where the kalua pig is brought out from the underground oven.
Even that moment has a way of slowing you down. It reminds you that what you’re experiencing is rooted deeply in tradition.
I said something in the episode that I want to repeat here: it’s not our job as visitors to rank or grade someone’s cultural expression.
The people who are qualified to judge hula are Native Hawaiians who have studied that art for years, like the judges at the Merrie Monarch Festival on the Big Island.
Our role is to receive it with humility and to be grateful it’s being shared at all.
On Kauai, two well-known options are Smith Family Garden Luau and Luau Ka Moku. Here’s a quick look at how they differ:
| Smith Family Garden Luau | Luau Ka Moku | |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Tropical garden, more intimate | Oceanfront, larger venue |
| Feel | Family-run, historic, relaxed | Dramatic, performance-forward |
| Great For | Families, first-timers | Couples, those wanting a show |
Both can give you a deeply cultural and memorable night. You can read more about the Smith Family Garden Luau here.
4. Wailua Falls
These last two are very different from each other, but they’re both easy wins in the best possible way.
Wailua Falls was actually my family’s favorite quick stop the last time we were on Kauai.
We only had four days before heading over to Oahu, so I was looking for things that were beautiful, easy, and worth the time for everyone from little kids to adults.
Wailua Falls checked every box. It didn’t eat up half our day. It was one of those pull-up-and-step-out moments where everybody just said “wow.” And it’s completely free.
If you can get there in the morning, do it. Early light can create rainbows right in the mist of the falls.
It’s one of those things to do on Kauai that belongs on every itinerary, no matter how packed your schedule is.
5. Kauai Humane Society Dog Trip
Now, number five is my personal favorite on the whole list. The Kauai Humane Society has a program that lets you take a shelter dog out for the day.
You pick up the dog, take it to a dog-friendly beach or trail, spend a few hours together, and bring it back in the evening. I honestly don’t know who gets more out of it, you or the dog.
This is what malama looks like in practice. Malama means to care for, to give back.
It’s a value I talk about a lot on this podcast, and this experience lives it out in a way that feels real and meaningful. If you’re an animal lover, or if you just want one part of your trip to feel a little more heartfelt, this one’s for you.
Check current availability and details directly with the Kauai Humane Society.
What You Need to Know Before You Go
A few practical things straight from the episode that’ll help you plan smarter:
- Check current conditions before visiting the North Shore or West Side. Kauai has seen significant storm impacts from recent Kona low systems. Haena requires advanced planning and Polihale has been closed. Things can change, so verify before you go.
- Book your Na Pali Coast tour early. Whether you choose helicopter or boat, these tours fill up fast, especially in summer. Lock it in before you finalize the rest of your itinerary.
- Visit Wailua Falls in the morning. The light is better, there are fewer people, and you’ve got the best shot at seeing a rainbow in the mist.
- Arrive at your luau ready to receive, not review. Leave the critic mindset at the hotel. Show up curious, humble, and grateful.
- Contact the Kauai Humane Society ahead of your trip. Availability for the dog field trip program can vary. Reach out early so you can plan it into your day.

There’s a lot more in Episode 224 that didn’t make it into this post, including Bryan’s fuller take on the cultural weight of a luau and why the Merrie Monarch comparison matters to how you show up as a visitor.
There’s also important context about Kauai’s recent storm recovery and how you can help even before you arrive. Listen to Episode 224 of Hawaii’s Best wherever you get your podcasts.

224_These 5 Kauai Experiences Are Actually Worth Your Time
[00:00:00] Top Five Kauai Picks
[00:00:00] Bryan Murphy: If you are heading to Kui tomorrow and you could only choose five experiences that would stay with you long after the trip is over, which ones should you choose? Well, today I’m gonna give you my top five experiences on the island of Kui
[00:00:19] Bryan Murphy: Loha. And welcome to Hawaii’s Best. I’m Brian Murphy, Hawaii, destination expert and your personal guide to planning an unforgettable trip to Hawaii. Now this list is not a popular list of things to do. This is really my list of experiences that I think really give you a feel for what is uniquely ua. Some are adventurous, some are cultural, and some are just simple and and free.
[00:00:45] Bryan Murphy: And I think one of these five could actually be one of those. Most meaningful things you do on your trip to ka.
[00:00:52] Storm Updates
[00:00:52] Bryan Murphy: But first, a quick update because there have been quite a few people asking about the recovery efforts from the two Kona low storms, and right now we’re looking at a third one. Doesn’t seem like it’s gonna be as bad, but definitely keep an eye on that.
[00:01:05] Bryan Murphy: And prayers needed for sure, especially for those recovering, on KA ahu for sure. But specifically we’re talking about Kauai. You wanna check current conditions before you head out really on any island, but especially on Kauai right now, especially for the North Shore or west side, Haena still takes advanced planning.
[00:01:25] Bryan Murphy: Poey Holly is still closed. These are due to the current detours, but those could change if you’re visiting this. Summer, for example, this could change or later this fall. Those are probably have, this is like right now, current news. If you are wanting to support on island or off island, I would highly recommend you two.
[00:01:43] Bryan Murphy: Listen to episode 2 23. Actually just. The last episode I did with Star DOL Thurston, talking all about the malama map and how you can get involved even if you’re not in Hawaii right now, and how you can get involved if you’re on the island of Oahu. I know she’s expanding to the neighboring islands of Hawaii, but I don’t wanna give too much weight.
[00:02:07] Bryan Murphy: After this episode, go, go. Listen to episode 2 23. Link below.
[00:02:11] Na Pali Coast Tour
[00:02:11] Bryan Murphy: Alright, let’s go ahead and start with number one of the most memorable experiences that you can do on the island of ka. And it’s super unique to KA and that is a Nepali coast helicopter tour or a boat tour. I wanna, I had on my list to talk about helicopter tour, but there has, uh, so sad.
[00:02:29] Bryan Murphy: Another helicopter crash recently you’ve probably seen in the news. So seeing the Nepali coast is. Incredible. And one of the best ways to do that, and one of the most incredible ways to do that is through a helicopter tour. But a boat tour gives you those very similar views of the Nepali coast. It’s all about these incredible sea cliffs, the ridges, the waterfalls, the deep green valleys.
[00:02:55] Bryan Murphy: The coastline of the Nepali coast is something that you can’t experience. You can’t just, the hike is not doable for many people and even. With the hike, you don’t get the same vantage point as you do through a helicopter tour or a boat tour and the Nepali coast, it’s, you’ve probably seen this sending photos, but it is one of those once in a lifetime things that you can only do on the island of Kui.
[00:03:20] Bryan Murphy: Most tours for helicopter do leave from La Hu. So that’s where you fly in. That’s the airport there. And you can see parts of the islands that are near impossible that you can’t see from the road. Yes, it’s a splurge. Yes, it might be a little bit of a risk, so you need to, you need to weigh that. But I mean, there’s so many helicopters that fly per day on the island of Kui and it is super sad when these.
[00:03:47] Bryan Murphy: Accidents do happen. So if that is something that you want to scratch off your list, then the other option to see Nepali Coast is gonna be a boat tour. And that is equally as good in its own way. Alright?
[00:04:01] Mountain Tubing Adventure
[00:04:01] Bryan Murphy: And number two is kind of a another unique different kind of venture, and that is Mountain Tubing.
[00:04:06] Bryan Murphy: This. One of those experiences that feels so uniquely KU to me. So basically what you, you know, mountain tubing, it takes you through this old plantation irrigation canals and their hand dug tunnels from ye’s. Sugar era. And somehow that history, which is long gone, has turned into one of the most fun outings on.
[00:04:26] Bryan Murphy: And I would say out of any of the islands, basically you’re out in the islands interior, surrounded by all the green that is the garden aisle. You’re floating through open canals, drifting into dark tunnel. Don’t worry, they give you a headlamp lighting so you can, you can see your way through it. It’s cold.
[00:04:44] Bryan Murphy: The water is cold, but it’s fun. Definitely unique. It’s different. It’s adventurous, but it’s not. Too intense. So if you have a older family, I would say, you know, eight years old and, and up, it’s definitely a family friendly activity and it’s one of those things once you get back home and you see those pictures and, and you’re ing the trip, this is definitely gonna be on the top of that.
[00:05:06] Free Kauai Guide
[00:05:06] Bryan Murphy: Real quick, as I’m going through these top five, I’ve also put together a free guide of another 15, so 20 activities to do on the island of ye that I feel are pretty unique to the island. And you can simply get that by going to the first link in the show notes below. And if you happen to be. On your phone listening to this, you can head over to our social media and you can just send me a message by simply typing in 2, 2, 4, and I will send you this free PDF.
[00:05:37] Luau With Respect
[00:05:37] Bryan Murphy: Alright, number three, a traditional luau. The luaus are just, I think, really some of the best, but let me just say this upfront. I think it’s super important to kind of preface this. I, I really think a luau can be one of the best. Evenings of your trip, if you go into it with the right mindset, so if you think it’s just gonna be a another dinner, it’s another show you might miss.
[00:06:02] Bryan Murphy: What makes it truly special and unique? Because for me, a good luau is. A whole lot more than just the entertainment. It’s story, it’s song Mele, it’s food, it’s ceremony, it’s hula, it’s history being shared in a way that I think feels shared in a way that is uniquely vulnerable and something that you can actually.
[00:06:28] Bryan Murphy: Feel. Typically you start off with a lay greeting. You know any luau you go to. Then there’s the IMU celebration where the KAA pig is brought out from the underground oven, the imu, and I think even that moment slows you down a little bit and reminds you that what you’re experiencing is rooted deeply. In tradition.
[00:06:48] Bryan Murphy: After that, you’ve got the meal, the music and the performances and hula especially is important here because hula, it isn’t just a dance, it, it tells a story. It preserves memory, it carries meaning. And I, I think it’s also worth saying that when we experience hula or any part of Hawaiian culture, our role as visitors is to receive it with humility and not.
[00:07:16] Bryan Murphy: Rank it. I, you know, I see so many, you know, these are the best luaus you gotta go to. And, and that is good and it’s valid, but it’s not on us as visitors to rank and judge culture. It’s, it’s not my place to decide what’s authentic enough. Quotes or to grade someone’s cultural expression. That’s not my role.
[00:07:39] Bryan Murphy: That’s not why I’m, I’m here. I’m there to listen, to learn humbly and to be grateful that it’s being shared at all. ’cause right now, as we speak, Mary Monarch Festival is going on on the big island in Hilo, and there are people who are judging performances right now of hula. And these are people who are well qualified.
[00:08:02] Bryan Murphy: Native Hawaiians who have studied the art and practice of hula. So on Kauai two well-known options are Smith Garden luau and luau ka maku. They each have a different feel, but both can give you a uniquely memorable night that adds a deep culture layer to your trip, and that’s why. I like recommending a luau, not because it’s something you’re supposed to do, but because if you show up with the right mindset, it can be one of the most grounding, memorable nights of your time in Hawaii.
[00:08:33] Wailua Falls Stop
[00:08:33] Bryan Murphy: Number four on this short list is Wa Lua Falls, and this was actually my family’s favorite. Easy stop. Last time we were on ka, we had only four days because we were hopping over to Oahu for six or seven days. So I was looking for places that were easy, beautiful, and well worth the time for everyone, and this was exactly one of those stops for us.
[00:08:55] Bryan Murphy: It was one of those quick stops that didn’t take a huge chunk of time out of our day, and everybody really loved it. And it’s free. Sometimes it’s just pulling up, stepping out and realizing, wow, this is incredible. You get that same feeling at Y May Canyon. This is one of those stops that’s. Really great if you can get there in the morning, even better.
[00:09:15] Bryan Murphy: Early light can create rainbows in the midst of the waterfall, and if your itinerary is tight or you’re traveling with kids or family y, Lua Falls is definitely one of those easy wins.
[00:09:27] Shelter Dog Day Out
[00:09:27] Bryan Murphy: Lastly, number five, something super unique is taking a shelter dog on a field trip for the day. And this is really one of those most unique things you can do on quiet.
[00:09:38] Bryan Murphy: And to me it’s actually one of the most special things you can do. I don’t know who gets more out of it. Taking the dog out for the day or the dog getting outside for the day is, is pretty cool. So the Kauai Humane Society has a program that lets you take a shelter dog out. For today. And if you pick up the dog, you spend time together, you go on a little adventure, maybe head to a dog friendly beach or a trail and then bring them back later in the day.
[00:10:03] Bryan Murphy: It’s genuinely meaningful for you. Something unique. It’s a break from kennel life for the dog. And I talk a lot about, on this podcast about malama to care for, to give back, and this is one of those experiences that really, I think speaks that it really lives that out. If you’re an animal lover or if you just want one part of your trip to feel a little more heartfelt, and this is a beautiful way to spend part of your day on Kauai.
[00:10:29] Recap And Wrap Up
[00:10:29] Bryan Murphy: So, quick recap. My top five for things to do on KA would be Nepali Coast tour, either helicopter or boat mountain tubing, a traditional luau. Link below is gonna be some of my suggestions, wa Lua Falls and a shelter dog Field trip. You got adventure culture, scenery and something meaningful. I think that’s a really great mix for your trip to ua.
[00:10:55] Bryan Murphy: And before I let you go, if you want 15 more things to do on Kauai that are worth your time, you can grab my free Kauai guide. It’s free.
