Oahu vs Maui: which island is better for your trip?
DIRECT ANSWER
Neither island is universally better. Oahu is the right call for first-time visitors, travelers on a budget, and anyone who wants variety in one place. Maui is the better fit for people chasing natural scenery, romance, or a slower, more immersive Hawaii experience.
Oahu is the most visited island in Hawaii by a significant margin. According to the Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, Oahu received roughly 5.8 million visitors in 2024, compared to about 2.3 million for Maui. The gap reflects real differences in what each island offers, not just popularity.
Oahu gives you more for less. You get Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, Waikiki Beach, the North Shore, and a public transit system that actually works. Maui gives you quieter beaches, the Road to Hana, Haleakala National Park, and a pace that feels closer to old Hawaii. But Maui is noticeably more expensive, car-dependent, and less convenient for travelers who want to pack a lot in.
One note for 2026 Maui visitors: Lahaina Town remains closed to tourists following the devastating August 2023 wildfires. The wider West Maui resort area, including Kaanapali and Kapalua, is fully open. Lahaina Harbor completed a phased reopening in December 2025. PRACTICAL TIP
If this is your first trip to Hawaii and you are leaning toward Maui for the beaches, know that Oahu has them too — Kailua and Lanikai on the windward side are consistently ranked among the best beaches in the U.S., and they are far less crowded than Waikiki. If your heart is set on the Road to Hana or Haleakala, that tips the scale to Maui.
If you are still genuinely undecided, book Oahu. First-timers almost never leave disappointed, and it sets you up to appreciate what Maui does differently on your next trip.
